UAV Battery Connectors and Balance Leads: A Procurement Checklist

12S 16000mAh 25C UAV Battery — product view

Two UAV batteries can look similar and still have incompatible electrical interfaces. A familiar yellow plug or a white multi-pin housing does not establish polarity, current capability or pin assignment. Before ordering, buyers should approve a complete interface definition. This checklist is for specification and supplier review; it is not an instruction to modify or rewire a battery.

Separate the interfaces by function

The main power connection carries the aircraft’s operating current. A balance connection, where used, gives access to individual series-group voltages for an appropriate charger or monitoring arrangement. A communications connection may carry data rather than charging or propulsion current. Some products combine functions in one housing; others use separate connectors.

Do not identify a connection solely by colour or size. Ask the supplier to label each interface on a drawing and explain its function. Avoid assuming a universal balance-wire order or a universal relationship between connector pin count and series count. The approved drawing for the exact configuration is the reference.

Create an interface approval table

Interface item Information to obtain Review action
Main connector Manufacturer, part number and mating part Compare with aircraft and charger records
Polarity Labelled positive/negative positions and drawing viewing direction Have the responsible technical team approve it
Balance connection Housing, pin assignment, series arrangement and compatible charging interface Compare against the charger’s documentation
Data connection, if fitted Physical connector, electrical interface and message specification Verify both hardware and protocol
Cable assembly Conductor specification, length, exit position and strain relief Check electrical and mechanical suitability
Change control Drawing number, revision and permitted alternatives Freeze the accepted sample configuration

Add photographs of the actual offered assembly, but keep the drawing authoritative for details that cannot be seen. A photograph rarely proves conductor size, contact material or internal wiring. Mark supplier images as reference material until the sample configuration has been confirmed.

Specify how the drawing is viewed

Polarity diagrams become ambiguous when one person reads a mating-face view and another reads a wire-entry view. Require the view to be named and orientation features to be visible. Record both halves of the connection rather than relying on potentially inconsistent terms such as male and female alone.

If the aircraft uses an adapter, include the adapter in the reviewed system. An additional interface can change resistance, available cable length and mechanical loading. Its convenience does not establish that the complete assembly is suitable for the required operating current.

Do not buy current capability by appearance

Review connector current limits for the intended ambient temperature, conductor size and assembly. Require the current-versus-temperature information for the exact manufacturer part number, alongside the finished cable assembly limits.

Request the relevant connector manufacturer’s documentation and the supplier’s assembly limits. Clarify continuous load and short peaks separately. If anti-spark or a connection sequence is required, specify the actual approved design and operating procedure. A housing’s external shape does not prove that such a feature is present.

Include installation and service access

Measure the route between the retained battery and the aircraft connection. Allow for the approved bend arrangement, plug engagement and service access without putting tension on a lead or loading a cell tab. Keep the pack’s dimensions separate from the installed envelope, which includes cables and connectors.

Handling matters during inspection as well as operation. Gens ace and Tattu’s LiPo battery guide cautions against damaging pouch seals and tabs. For procurement, that supports a simple rule: do not bend, dismantle or improvise a connection to make an unapproved sample fit. Raise the mismatch with the supplier and platform team.

Approve the sample and control substitutions

Have qualified personnel compare the delivered assembly against the approved drawing before energizing the system. Record interface identity, visible workmanship and the results of the agreed inspection procedure. Retain photographs and a labelled reference sample where practical. Any later change to the connector, cable or pin assignment should trigger a documented review before shipment.

For a 12S 16000mAh 25C UAV battery enquiry, include the aircraft-side mating part and the charger interface as well as the capacity requirement. The UAV and FPV catalogue helps identify a product family; New Journey’s quotation contact is the place to provide the configuration requirements.

Buyer question: If the plug fits, can I approve the battery?

No. Mechanical mating is only one check. Polarity, pin assignment, voltage range, load limits and charging compatibility must also match the approved system.
